What is a Virtual Assistant?

A virtual assistant is an independent worker who assists with administrative, business development, social media, marketing and/or other tasks.  By taking on recurring tasks and administrative work, they free up time for small business owners and managers.
Virtual assistants will work remotely, commonly from a home-office.

What were you doing before you started your virtual assistant business?

I worked for a non-profit for several years and then I became a stay-at-home mom. Once my son started school, I had the time to go back to school for my second degree while working for a corporate VA (virtual assistant) company, but I needed more flexibility. I committed to starting my own virtual assistant business.

What made you want to do this, and how did you get started?

I have a knack for being a very organized person and felt I could help others stay organized in their lives as well. As stated before, I initially started working for a corporate VA company and I found I really enjoyed helping other people succeed with their business goals as well as connecting with a wide variety of individuals. Once my business started, I realized how gratifying it is to be my own boss!

What does a typical day look like for you being a virtual assistant?

My day always starts bright and early when I get my son off to school. My workday begins immediately. It starts with checking customer support, numerous email and calendar accounts, and other systems. This allows me to look at my overall day and see what tasks I need to tackle. A few of my VA clients have a daily “all hands meeting” in the morning that I attend to make sure I am keeping up with everything going on with their businesses and see what I can do to eliminate some of the tasks brought to the meetings.

Throughout the rest of my workday, I continue to check clients’ email and schedules to stay on top of anything that comes through. Also I do customer support, billing or anything else the clients feel I can assist them with. I like to wrap up each workday by reviewing my schedule for the following day and keep a tasks list of what needs to be immediately addressed the next morning.

I have a small set-up in my bedroom with a Surface Pro, extra monitor and a printer/scanner. In order to be a VA, there aren’t a lot of start-up costs if you have a computer and printer that you can use – which is great for anyone who doesn’t have money to start a business.

Where do you want to end up / what goals do you want to achieve?

The main goal I want to achieve is to have an amazing list of clients I can help in their daily lives – keeping them organized and giving them the time to focus on their own business goals.

What are some of the more memorable obstacles that you’ve had to overcome?

The most memorable obstacle that I initially had to overcome was starting my business. I had the ambition and drive but it is often scary to put yourself out there. Other obstacles would have to include finding the right balance of working long hours and being a good parent. I feel I have definitely succeeded in this. Just ask my son!

What advice would you give to someone who is wanting to start their own business?

The best advice that I can give to someone who is wanting to start their own business is to GO FOR IT – don’t hesitate! The best thing to do is evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, start with a basic business plan, focus on something you are passionate about, and don’t ever be afraid to reach out for help.

What do customers commonly need the most help with?

The most common things clients hire me for is:
Email Management
Schedule management
Quickbooks
Invoicing
Payroll

Could use a virtual assistant?

Growing up in a small family business and spending years managing my own small business – having a good virtual assistant would have been an incredible asset. It allows you to delegate almost anything you need to, which can be such a life saver when you’re in the middle of an important project. Or perhaps you need to step out of the office and you need someone to make a few phone calls for you.

You hire a virtual assistant for a certain number of hours per month, which you can use whenever you need to. Especially for those of you who are running around with severe ADHD like me, having a professional and organized virtual assistant that you can reach out to would be amazing!
